Bergamot, the Light-bringer

Are you celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah or Winter Solstice? Each of these holidays symbolically represents shining a light on the darkest part of the year.

It has been a very dark year for many, emotionally, spiritually and financially. I can think of no better essential oil to lighten the holidays than bergamot.

From a psychospiritual standpoint, bergamot is a light-bringer. Folklorically, it was used in southern Italy for depression and mood swings. Bergamot is commonly used in contemporary aromatherapy for depression, sadness, anxiety, nervous tension and general nervous system imbalance. This sunny citrus oil opens the heart, and is like a balm to those grieving their first Christmas without a loved one. If you are having difficulty getting into the holiday spirit, feeling emotionally overwhelmed, or feeling a lack of spontaneity, diffusing some bergamot into your environment can be a godsend.

Holidays may bring up family relationship issues, and using bergamot during prayer or meditation can help us mend hearts, forgiving others as well as ourselves. This oil is about facing the dark, our shadow side, and embracing it. It is an excellent oil to use for meditation throughout the transition into the New Year.

May light shine upon your holidays... wishing you a joyous and peaceful Christmas!
