Aromatherapy for Shingles

Over the past year or so, the Dallas area has experienced an increase in the number of shingles cases. I understand that this situation is also occurring in other parts of the country. Shingles, or Herpes zoster, is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox, and is a latent manifestation of that childhood disease.

In terms of home remedies for shingles, clinical aromatherapy offers a tried and true one: ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora ct. cineole) mixed in a base of calophyllum oil (Calophyllum inophyllum). The ravintsara has strong anti-viral action against Herpes zoster, while the calophyllum cleans up the pustular residue in the lesions by promoting phagocytosis. Melissa essential oil may be added to this blend if desired.

Please note that this blend is effective for rapidly healing up shingles lesions, but has no affect on the post-herpetic neuralgia suffered by some shingles victims.
